SoJo's Story

SoJo was originally named Social Journal. The initial vision was to become a platform that would better facilitate connections and share information to inspire the next generation of young changemakers to take action and convert the ideas written in their journals into tangible, functioning social projects. The idea for SoJo was conceived in the fall of 2010 by Kanika Gupta. For her Master's thesis, Kanika conducted a Canada-wide study on the Factors Influencing the Start-up of Youth-initiated Social Ventures. While speaking with over 50 individuals from coast-to-coast who had initiated a social venture or community project as a young adult, Kanika gathered an amazing repertoire of information. Once through, she committed herself to finding a good platform to share all of that information in a meaningful way, after discovering the lack of such a resource. There is no need for anyone wishing to start a project to go at it alone, thus SoJo was born! SoJo has since expanded its mandate to support all social innovators in developing and implementing their ideas to solve some of our world's most pressing challenges. Canadian Commission for UNESCO's Official Endorsement


The Canadian Commission for UNESCO considers SoJo's interactive online platform as an opportunity to foster a long term impact in the field of social entrepreneurship among Canadian and international youth. Also, SoJo answers to an article from the final report of the 7th UNESCO Youth Forum as such: In response to employment challenges, we strongly encourage Member States to expand the scope of education by including entrepreneurial skills and training opportunities, and intergenerational partnerships for youth aligned to rapidly changing labour market needs, particularly in non-traditional fields, such as e-learning.
